Challenge

Providing essential additional sewer capacity with minimal disruption to the local community, in the shortest timeframe and with the lowest carbon count.

Solution

Selection of Aquaspira pipes reduced the number of site deliveries from 120 loads to 30. The small OD of the Composite Steel Reinforced pipe minimised the cut and footprint in the highway. Following a detailed comparison, the proposal to use Aquaspira scored significantly better in whole life carbon calculations.

Outcome

Disruption was greatly reduced and progress with the sewer installation is ahead of schedule. Ambitious Carbon Reduction Targets set by Scottish Water have been achieved.

Sewers of this scale would ordinarily be built using concrete pipe to achieve the required strength, but manufacturing and transporting these across long distances generates significant carbon emissions. The composite steel pipe being used has a lower carbon cost and is much lighter, while having higher strength than could be achieved using plastic pipe at this scale.
