Carbon Reduction and Efficiency Targets Exceeded for Dwr Cymru Welsh Water CSO Project at Llanwern, Newport.
When tasked with achieving substantial carbon reductions on a project for a new large diameter CSO storage tank at Llanwern village, established DCWW contractor Alun Griffiths turned to Aquaspira for a solution
Challenge
The primary objective was to provide an alternative to the conventional concrete pipe and manhole system that would demonstrably reduce carbon. In addition to this, access to the site was very limited, making it very difficult to offload and manoeuvre long pipes, or handle large, heavy manhole chambers. There was also a requirement to minimise programme time and disruption to the local community.

Solution
In conjunction with the design and construction team at Alun Griffiths, Aquaspira designed a simple CSO storage pipeline with integrated Access End Pipes at each end of the run, providing a complete, push-fit, sealed system end-to-end.
Weighing just 250Kg’s, the 2.6m length pipes were safely and quickly offloaded with a small machine, and weighing only 400Kg’s, the Access units were equally safe and simple to handle and install.
Outcome
The primary objective was achieved with an estimated 50% overall reduction in carbon. The number of delivery loads was halved and programme time reduced by almost 4 weeks, providing a significant benefit to all parties, including the local community and landowner.
Testimonial
“Access and working space on site were very restricted, so the shorter length, lightweight pipes worked very well. The push-fit, sealed joints also enabled us to progress very quickly with the installation. Major carbon savings were made too, so we will be looking forward to using Aquaspira again on future sites.” Carl Bobby Vale, Alun Griffiths.

Helsington Moss Bridge Project achieved a 79% CO2e saving against the original baseline.
