Boosting Capacity, Cutting Stormwater Overflows

A major Southern Water project near Whitstable in Kent, designed to increase wastewater storage capacity and reduce stormwater overflows by 30%.

Challenge

A primary challenge was to establish a safe and efficient method of connecting the 900mmØ Aquaspira pipe into the concrete tank at high level. From an operational perspective, grouting the pipe into the tank wall would be difficult. Associated with this, it was essential that the bespoke components were accurately designed, produced and available for installation within a very constrained timeframe.

In addition to the challenges of ‘buildability’, there was an overarching requirement to demonstrate carbon reduction.

Solution

In conjunction with the project designer and construction team, Aquaspira designed a flange adaptor set incorporating an Aquaspira spigot. This enabled the contractor to quickly bolt the flange to the wall of the chamber, and push-fit the first Aquaspira pipe immediately.

Outcome

The close partnership and pre-construction planning by CMDP, Davey Civils and Aquaspira paid dividends, resulting in a smooth and efficient operation on site, and completion of the project within the limited programme time.

The use of Aquaspira pipes enabled significant carbon reduction ambitions to be demonstrated, exceeding client expectations.

The upgrade of Swalecliffe Wastewater Treatment Works is a significant, high-profile project for Southern Water and CMDP. We are delighted to have been able to boost the environmental credentials of the project through the use of CSR pipes from Aquaspira Limited and will be looking to utilise these on other projects for Southern Water in the future.
